Desert Ecosystem
Desert Ecosystem can be defined as the inter-relatedness of the living organisms (biotic components) and Non-living things (abiotic components) in a desert. Therefore, a desert consists of a bunch of factors that affect the habitat and survival of plants and animals.
Not just that, even living organisms in a desert depend upon other organisms for their survival. For instance, a Camel usually depends upon desert plants to survive, and snakes and other reptiles prey on small animals like rats and insects.
The living organisms in a desert depend upon non-living things such as Water, Sunlight, Climate, Sand, Dunes, etc. This survival cycle is completely interconnected.
Types of Deserts
We can categorize the deserts into two parts.
Hot Deserts
A hot desert is a part of the world that has high average temperatures and very low precipitation. These areas need to have less than 250mm of rainfall per year to be classified as a desert. The food web in the hot desert biome is a simple one.
The species here generally include trees, shrubs, cactus, wildflowers, and grasses. Some other species like ants and other insects, snakes, insect-eating lizards, tarantulas, and Carnivores such as Hawks and Foxes are also found here.
Cold Deserts
These deserts are characterized by cold winters with snowfall and large rainfalls widely during the winter and occasionally over the summer. They occur in areas with extremely high rainfall periods such as the Antarctic and Greenland and also the Nearctic realm.
The most common vegetation here is grasses and shrubs. Also, small mammals like moles, jerboa, hedgehogs, pocket mice, and armadillos are found. Also, different species of reptiles are most common in cold deserts.
