The GST rate and its legislation were introduced on 1 July 2017. It was considered as one of the biggest changes in the country’s taxes and tax reforms that were never seen before. GST gradually removed the cascading taxes that were calculated before.

As per the earlier, the amount of tax calculated on the good and services was too high leading to bring a change in the same.
In the 44th GST Council meeting that was held under the Chairmanship of Union Finance and Corporate Affairs Minister Smt Nirmala Sitharaman, it was decided to cut short the GST rates over the specific items that were used in Covid-19 relief as well as in managing the pandemic till 30h September 2021.

GST tax rates for goods and services include the 4 tier tax structure. According to this, the proposed tax slabs for goods are 5%, 12%, 18% and 28%. Whereas the rates on services include 5%, 12%, 18% and 28%, i.e. similar to goods. It is to be noted that the government has not included the healthcare and educational services for GST.
