Heart Words PDF
Irregularly spelled words are called “heart words” because part of the word has to be “learned by heart”. Heart words are also used so often that they require automatic reading and spelling. Examples of heart words are: said, are, and where.
These words appear most often in print. They are the first words we want our students to remember because they appear so often in the lessons. The ability to automatically retrieve these words allows students to read fluently and successfully.

Students enjoy making hearts over heart letters and hearts help them remember irregular spellings. For example, in the word “said“, hearts would go above ‘ai’ because those letters are an unexpected spelling for the abbreviation ‘e’.
