Prebiotic Foods
Certain plant-based food-derived substances that help to feed the good bacteria in your child’s gut are called prebiotics. Prebiotic food is healthy or “good” gut bacteria that live within the GI (gastrointestinal) tract. All prebiotics are fiber, but not all fibers are prebiotics.
Fructo-oligosaccharides (FOS), galacto-oligosaccharides (GOS), and trans-galacto-oligosaccharides (TOS) are common prebiotics. Fermentation of prebiotics by gut microbiota produces short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), including lactic acid, butyric acid, and propionic acid.
Other probiotic-rich foods found due to the study include onion rings, creamed onions, cowpeas (also known as black-eyed peas), asparagus, and Kellogg’s All-Bran cereal. All of these prebiotic foods contain around 50-60 milligrams of food.
