Suspension System
You must have come across the term “Suspension System” especially if you own or drive a vehicle. So what is a Suspension System?
Suspension is the term given to the system of springs, shock absorbers, and linkages that connects a vehicle to its wheels. It serves a dual purpose – contributing to the car’s handling and braking. The suspension also protects the vehicle itself and any cargo or luggage from damage and wears.
It is important for the suspension to keep the road wheel in contact with the road surface as much as possible because all the road or ground forces act on the vehicle.
Different Suspension Systems
- Conventional Suspension System- Two wheels are mounted on either side of the rigid axle. So, when one wheel encounters a bump, both the wheel does not execute parallel up and down motion.
- Independent Suspension System- In this, both the front and the rear wheel are utilized. When one wheel goes down, the other wheel does not have much effect.
- Air Suspension System- It comprises the compressor, supplying air to the air tank. The airbags are placed on each wheel. So when the load is applied, air bags are compressed actuating the leveling valve.
- Hydro-elastic Suspension System- It is a system where the front and rear suspension systems were connected together in order to better level the car when driving. The front and rear suspension units have Hydro-elastic displacers, one per side.
